ডহর কী? আবদ্ধ জলভূমি, বলা ভালো পুষ্করিণী। নব্যগঠিত ঝাড়গ্রাম জেলায় লোধাশুলি জঙ্গলের ঠিক পরেই, জঙ্গলমহলের কোলে একটি ছোট গ্রাম বাড়দেউল। যার কোনো একটি গহীন শালবনের গভীরে রয়েছে এক জলাশয় যার নাম নিতে দিনের আলোয় কেঁপে ওঠে সেখানকার মানুষেরা। এই ডহর নাকি চতুর্দিক থেকে ঘিরে রাখা হয়েছে এক শুভ জিনিস দিয়ে, যাতে কোনো মানুষ কখনওই এর সংস্পর্শে না আসতে পারে। পাণ্ডব বর্জিত এই পুকুরের কাছে শুধু একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়েই যেতে হয় তাও খুব সাবধানে। কেন ডহরের জল স্পর্শ করা নিষিদ্ধ? কেনই ডহরের জলে কেউ ভুল করেও পড়লে, তাকে সাথে সাথে মেরে ফেলে সেখানের লোকেরা? বাবাও ক্ষমা করেনা তার একমাত্র পুত্রকে। ওরা মনে করে ডহরের জলে এমন কেউ বাঁধা রয়েছে যে ডহর থেকে বেরিয়ে আসতে চায় নানান ছলে। কী সেই ভয়ঙ্কর জিনিস যার নাম নিতে চায় না সেখানকার লোকেরা? টুসুপুজোর পরের চারদিন ঠিক কীসের আবাহন করে বাড়দেউল, রানিডিহির মানুষেরা? এই সময়, রাতের অন্ধকারেই বা কারা যায় সেই নিষিদ্ধ পুকুরের কাছে? নারীর পোশাক আর অলঙ্কারে ঘুরে বেড়ানো এই তিনজন প্রৌঢ়ই বা কারা?
চাকরিসূত্রে ট্রান্সফার হয়ে জঙ্গলমহলে ছেলে আর মেয়েকে নিয়ে হাজির হয় ডিভোর্সি আবিন।কিন্তু এই বাড়দেউলে আসা কী তার জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় ভুল? কালা আখানের রাত্রে হুট করে নিখোঁজ হয় আবিনের ছেলে টম। যে টমকে পুলিশ তন্ন তন্ন করেও খুঁজে পায়না সে ফিরে আসে ঠিক তার তিনদিন পর। কিন্তু আবেভাবে কেমন যেন বদলে গিয়েছে সে। কোথায় ছিল সে এই তিনদিন? কেন তার ফিরে আসার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই বদলে যেতে থাকল আশে পাশের সবকিছু? দাদা অন্তপ্রাণ টুটু আবিনেক দেখে কেমন যেন ভয়ে কুঁকড়ে থাকে। কেন? কেনই বা, কালো পোশাক পরা লোকজন সন্ধ্যা হলেই চক্রাকারে প্রদক্ষিণ করতে থাকে আবিনের বাড়ির চতুর্দিক? কেনই বা সকলে বলছে যারা মারা গিয়েছিল অপঘাতে, তাঁরা একে একে যে যার ঘরে ফিরছে। লোকে বলছে, "ডহর নাকি জাইগছে"। কে জাগালো এই ডহরকে? কেনই বা জাগালো? আর এই জাগানোর পরিণামই বা কোন ভয়ঙ্কর এক অভিশাপের তিলক এঁকে দিতে চলেছে বাড়দেউল, রানিডিহির কপালে?
